Suicide: Joseph Behiel - A Soldier who Served

A Contra Costa County jail inmate who attempted suicide last week has died, a sheriff’s spokesman said today. Pleasanton resident Joseph Behiel, 21, was pronounced dead at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez on Friday, sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
Autopsy results show he died from asphyxiation and his death was ruled a suicide, Lee said. Lee said Behiel died the day after he tried to kill himself in the intake area of the Martinez Detention Facility. Emergency responders were called to the jail around 2:55 p.m. Thursday and found Behiel unresponsive.
Medical staff at the jail had performed life-saving measures before emergency crews arrived, Lee said. Behiel had been booked into the jail around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of weapons crimes, resisting arrest and a probation violation, according to the sheriff’s office. Lee said the death is under investigation by the sheriff’s and district attorney’s offices, as is standard protocol in such cases.
